Haha, a pre order event? Wow, what a balls up.
Apple rapped them over the knuckles for allegedly withholding stock and rightly so. I wonder if this is the result.

The thing that's frustrated me with Apple is the long wait for even minor product updates. The Merom update across the line should be a no brainer especially since the chip is more efficient and is easy to implement. Almost every other manufacturer announced Merom laptops already. Knowing Apple though, they'll just drag it out without mercy and only do the Merom updates in January for Macworld. In the meantime, we'll all be wondering if perhaps next week would be the right time to buy a new notebook because of some hot new rumor. Very frustrating. Now that Apple has switched to Intel, why not do chip updates without the fanfare that accompanied the minor PowerPC updates?
What long wait? Merom was just introduced last week, and nobody is shipping computers with Merom yet. Apple is moving away from just doing product refreshes at MWSF. In order to maximize media exposure, Apple has recently been upgrading a few products at a time (usually 2-3), but avoids introducing something on the same day as another manufacturer.
Apple will introduce Merom-based products this month, you can count on it.
After all, when was the last time AppleInsider and ThinkSecret agreed on anything? ;)

I just bought a used 160GB iPod Classic last week. Having my entire music library in my car at all times: Priceless.
same thing here, but replace weeks with months.
i wish they'd come out with a cheaper deal made to interface with car stereos that has no screen, but hundreds of gigs of space. no inputs even. just a rest button and usb connector.

We just purchased CS5 last week, at the massively over-inflated UK price.
Now they want us to pay them some more for a service pack.
Thanks a lot Adobe.
Edit:
OK I take it back... well partially... the UK prices are still a disgrace.
From Adobe's site:
"You might be eligible for a complimentary upgrade if you recently bought your software product (full or upgrade)."

Hi...do you think this upgrade will solve the ramdon MB crash problems? Or do you think, as someone told me yesterday, that this problems might be already be solved?
They were solved already with the last firmware update...and we're gonna have new MBs until next Tuesday, I am pretty sure.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. Humans are social creatures, we evolved being social to help us survive against great odds.
...
I'll see if I can find it, but I wouldn't boast about having Asperger's, it's better to boast about being an NT (Myers-Briggs personality type)
I was joking. I don't think we need a society of of Dr. House walking around.
Me = INTJ, if you were curious. :P

I agree, and am fortunate to have a legit edu connection. That said, companies vary on their proof requirements. Apple, in my experience, will give you the edu price by just saying you are a student/teacher/buying it for one. I've seen them sell a Mac at that price to grandparents, etc. Pretty decent policy. MS just requires a .edu email, but then again technet is so cheap that the edu discount pales. of course, with technet using the software in a production environment is a license violation.
Right, and 9 times out of 10 the Apple Specialist will just give you the discount just so he/she can attach Mobile Me and Applecare and whatever else . . . . . oh that was just me. :D
Seriously though the requirements for that EDU discount are just as you said, nothing more than mentioning it or purchasing it through an online store. At the end of the day, you will OWN your EDU copy of a software title rather than some garbled up binary from a torrent made to look like a piece of software.
Oh ya. I have several pieces of glass that individually cost more than the body. People complain about software lock in; MS / APPLE ?Adobe et. al. have nothing on the camera manufacturers and their proprietary mounts.
True! That Nikkor 85mm 1.4 I am drooling over is going for $2200, far more than the price of my $1200 D7000 (which trumps the D2xs it replaced in so many ways).

The current iPod is 4.1 x 2.4 inches. A mass market paperback -- which ain't big -- is roughy 7.1 x 4.3 inches, which is almost twice as large as an iPod. Most eBook devices are the size of a mass market paperback or larger. Portable DVD/DVR players are also typically larger than the iPod enclosure. I am all for a wide format iPod where the screen is the thing, but I'm not sure I want to read a book (or watch movies) on it if it's going to be the same size as the current iPod enclosure.
...but then, I wouldn't want to listen to my music on a paperback size device...

It has nothing to do with who buys what. It's all about marketing. And I assure you Mr. Jobs is considerably better at marketing than you (or anyone else on these boards).
Indeed!
Instead of fretting over the wait, envision that they were already released and that they all have issues (I don't really believe that they will have these issues) such as bad screens, overheating, faulty graphics cards. Consider yourself lucky that you didn't get one of these. In a couple of months when they're released, think of them as being fixed mbps. Then, grab one and enjoy.

Remember, Apple and Dell get their batteries from the same manufacturer. ;)
Same manufacturer does not mean the same battery. Apple designed their battery from scratch, no other computer manufacturer uses the same battery as Apple. I'm floored at how fast it charges, how long it lasts, and how little charge its lost (its at 90% after 9 months and 172 cycles).

But does the 1GB use one memory slot or two?
As long as the MacBook continues to use integrated graphics, you will never see Apple shipping them with single-memory-stick configurations. Unlike the MacBook Pro, using mismatched memory sticks in a MacBook's slots actually results in a potentially painful performance hit.
That's because, if the memory inserted in all slots are perfectly matched, the memory manager can handle multiple requests at once: one access for each memory slot. The GMA950's memory is ideally all grouped together on one memory stick. This way, one stick will never be tied up servicing the GMA950, so the CPUs will always have exclusive access to it. Only the single "shared" stick ever needs to be deal with possible contention from multiple masters.
If you only have one memory stick, then the CPUs and the GPU will always need to fight each other for their turn at accessing memory.

I agree with you there is just something about the 13" MacBook that doesn't fit but the 12" its PERFECT
I could not agree more! That 13'' is just too bulky compared to the beautiful form factor of the best laptop ever made. That said.. mine is getting sloooower, I'll bump it up to 1.25Gb of RAM here soo, just waiting for prices to come down.
I'm not getting rid of this laptop anytime soon.

I think that by far the most pragmatic and likely scenario is that the slogan refers to streaming video on Apple TV and perhaps the iPhone, coupled with some content-related announcements (hi-def and/or rentals).
That's all, nothing more exciting.

I'd say that Verizon maybe blocking the update because they want to make sure that all hell doesn't break loose once it is released. It would be interesting to see what the justification is, maybe 5.0 will be the 'big change' for iOS on AT&T and Verizon phones? It'd be ironic if it's really Verizon that's iOS blocking. Or it's simply not worth Apple's effort to support only a miniscule number of customers with a minor upgrade.
yes, what's up with 666 MB... :(It's just a set of repeating numbers. Personally, I think it's awesome; if it was deliberate, it's a great indicator of their humor.
