The difference is that a $50K Lexus costs more than forty times more than a 13" MacBook Pro. This discussion was about whether Apple is limited by being "affordable". There are lots of people who _cannot_ buy the Lexus. But everyone who buys the $20K GM can easily buy a 13" MBP which costs just 6 percent of the GM.

Yes, there will always be people who decide to buy a cheaper computer. What I am saying is that there are very few people who _cannot_ buy a Macintosh, as is claimed so often. And those who decide to buy cheap, they should think about how you get the best value for your money: You buy something of quality, without any unneeded luxuries that just waste money, and then you look after it.

Ok you keep bring up quality. You are aware that Apple does not Produce the highest quality computers. In fact apple of the top 8 producers is ranked forth behind Sony, (some of the more expensive PC.) Toshiba (they now use more solder then anyone else.) and the industry leader ASUS (They produce many of their own parts.)

When purchasing a MAC over any other PC you are not buying a better "Engine" because they get theirs from the same people. When you buy a mac you buy the ability to use MAC OS. That is the ONLY real difference between a mac and a "PC"(Windows based computer).

I do not own a mac Computer not because I can't afford it. Not because I wanted to buy cheap but rather I don't really like their only selling point MAC OS. I use my PC for gaming and I would have to use windows so i purchased a Windows PC rather then buying a mac just to install windows and completely ignore MAC OS. I was able to build my own PC and save money buy buying a PC.

hahaha, that'd be a bit of an oversight. i wonder if the new batteries are being specially made for the recall...
Sort of. Sony corrected the defect in their cells, so that newly built battery packs using those cells won't have the problem.

Anyone who is a AASP or has a Service Source account would have Service Source access to a restricted area, service.info.apple.com , the service manual is available-macpro.pdf.

    It is 28MB.

Training-http://service.info.apple.com/service_training/macpro-aasp/index.html (anyone who is a AASP or has a Service Source account would have Service Source access, so they can use this link).
There's a RSS feed there now-giving a list and details of manuals that have been revised-a bit like what Sony ESI's manuals have-a revision history page.
    Developer note-public:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/Mac_Pro_0608/index.html
The computer comes with Mac OS X version 10.4.7 installed.
    ADC site redesigned too.
The value of the computer model machine identifier string is MacPro1,1.

Notes from the service manual for those who have access to it:
On page 65, there is a procedure for removing the Xeons-as a photo on page 66 indicates, these are socketed dual 771 pin LGA sockets. That means it is possible to change the processor yourself, but Apple obviously won't support 3rd-party swaps.

As, I expected-multiple PCI-E slots, so you can a multi display set up-up to 8. NVIDIA and ATI
    RAM-is on a riser card (p19)
Power Supply-is at the top (p 26), cables- custom, 4 cables, unlike with many other Core 2's which have a single ATX cable. Connector-is it still F-Type or back to 3 pin, kettle style?
    SuperDrive-which model?, procedure-p 14
    BT-separate, as is AirPort-the card looks the iMac's card (p 44/47)
    Antenna-on the bottom-covered by a plastic cover (procedure-p 96)

Mac OS X Server-is now universal:
Using Mac OS X Server on Mac Pro
Mac OS X Server can run on Mac Pro as a supported configuration; in fact, it is available through the Apple Store as a Configure-to-Order option. Mac Pro is the first Intel-based Mac to support Apple's server software. Mac Pro uses the Universal (v. 10.4.7) version of Mac OS X Server.

Mac OS X Server v10.4.7 (Universal) supports installation onto any Macintosh server or desktop computer with an Intel or PowerPC G4 or G5 processor. Mac OS X Server v10.4.7 (Universal) is available through the Apple Store as a Configure-to-Order option for Mac Pro.

This release of Mac OS X Server v10.4 continues to support upgrades from Mac OS X Server v10.2 and Mac OS X Server v10.3. Upgrades from Mac OS X Server v10.4 (PowerPC) to Mac OS X Server v10.4 (Universal) are not supported.

Improvements in Mac OS X Server v10.4.7 (Universal) include:

Improved performance (AFP, SMB/CIFS, NFS, Java JVM).

VNC support is enabled by default when installing Mac OS X Server for remote installation and setup from non-Mac OS X systems.

    64-bit MySQL.

Xcode 2.4 with support for developing 64-bit applications for Intel processors.

Speaking as someone who has 3 wal-mart supercenters within 5 miles of them, I can definetely say that they don't need any more money... is a few million a little meager for the likes of the children?

what is wal mart going to do, get rid of the ipods, which give them revenue? also, does anyone remember them going insane over the apple music store?

Would you buy a CD MB the day the C2D comes out for $700

No. It isn't worth pinching pennies when it comes to notebooks. I'd gladly pay the extra to get something that runs significantly cooler (which apparently is the case with the new MBPs).

iPod 3G was fully touch operated (save for the hold switch).
iPod 4G+Photo went backwards and added physical buttons. To this day they still haven't gone back to the full touch design of the 3G.

The 3G had separate, discrete, non-mechanical touch pad "buttons." 4G+ eliminated those and incorporated them all onto the touch wheel. For you to claim that those weren't buttons is like me claiming my microwave oven's keypad is fully touch operated. Each of the touch pads are a discrete element. I would have thought that was obvious in the context of what I wrote instead of having to be explicitly stated.

weird. mostly everything i bought doesnt play elsewhere and I bought it all after april '09

    Are you in Japan?

In January Apple announced that all music would be available in the iTunes Plus format, bringing an end to the sale of music with DRM on iTunes. In April, the sale of protected music ended in the western versions of the store, making all music in the iTunes Store "iTunes Plus". iTunes store users may choose to "upgrade" any of their downloaded iTunes music to iTunes Plus if they wish, but most songs require payment to do so. FairPlay DRM-protected music is still available in the Japanese iTunes store.

agreed, but thats why i am very very interested in the typeface. the thin (notably thin) typeface suggests something beyond just the obvious "wireless stuff" connotations of the wording. if that phrase was set in the normal Myriad Pro weight thats one thing, to me this says more than just that.

but then again i am a designer and clearly have a fetishistic relationship with typography. so i may be wishfully thinking. :)

Has anyone considered that apple might not be realeasing the wide screen super secret video ipod because it dosn't exist?

It might not exist, and then again, it just might exist. Who on these forums knows? Maybe Steve will join and tell us if it exists or not.

Jobs was referring to third-party software announcements. He would have mentioned something big like an MBP update in the keynote.

I don't know what people are fussing about. If these price points are true, Windows Vista is pretty cheap.

Remember, if you buy Vista, it'll most likely last at least 4-5 years before the next paid upgrade, unlike with OS X where if you want the latest and greatest, you're looking at an upgrade almost every year.

Vista looks to be a big jump from WinXP too, and seems a lot more mac-like. Complain all you want, but more competition puts Cupertino into a sweat and drives Apple into innovating even more. Support for Direct X 10 is going to be felt in about 1-2 years when people start getting DX10 graphics cards and more games take advantage of it.

At least with Apple you DO get the 'greatest'. Not so with Brand X I am afraid. How long has it taken MS to get a new OS out? Years! And if MS could charge for their Service Packs, by calling them something new, they would. But, their product is so full of bad code they cannot do it. Also, your view that MS's innovation "..puts Cupertino into a sweat and drives Apple into innovating even more." is a laugh. It might stop some of the bleeding in Redmond. Vista better be a success. Otherwise, the market share is going to shrink even further.

...at this moment, it's not a problem most Mac users need to worry about. But blowing it off completely is sophomoric at best.

Yup. As others have said, this isn't an Apple specific problem, but its good to expose the flaws found and get them sorted. Nothing really to see here, move along.

Dang video keeps stalling on me. We much be flooding it with requests.

Well... but at least it's not Apple's fault, because they didn't produce the driver. Therefore it's actually not a concern of Apple's but of the driver's producer's.

On the other hand Apple did include it into it's OS seemingly without testing it thorougly, and that is, of course, a concern of Apple's. So they will have to work together to get rid of that - and I'm sure they will - and I may be smug again. :p

###Just my two cents.... it is exactly this kind of "attitude" that make tech and Windows people want to throw up. Of course, it's Apple's concern and it SHOULD be yours. If it comes with the Mac...it's Apple responsibility...period. As an Apple user, i'm embarrassed more and more by the Apple community. Gonna have to start painting over the Apple logo on my PB.

I guess it wouldn't make good journalism and rumors to just say Apple will do things based on user experience while other companies want to dominate specs on paper. Things we (consumers) have asked for have been added to the iPhone slowly, but the implementation is better than other devices for the most part.

Good business sense says to leave the iPad alone until next year and (finally) have a level of transparency if you next iPhone doesn't come out until the fall or later. Reason being Apple has a cycle of customers locked into a buying pattern that ensures success for years to come. One thing that could mess things up is to change the pattern now. Of course, when you are one of the big dogs arrogance is an issue and going years with one carrier wasn't the best business move.

The exploit is apparently in the device driver, and so its more of an issue with Atheros than with Apple. I mean, a vulnerability is a vulnerability, and it still needs to be fixed, but the compromised code is most likely not Apple's at least.

Many windows exploits deals with third party software.. what's your point?.
Actually, the hackers were very nice to let microsoft and apple plus the device drivers know about the problem.

Still, Apple is ultimately responsible for putting the software in their machines and in advertisements, they never say "macs are safe except for third party software". Actually, even with this, macs are a lot safer than windows but i predict the assualt is coming. It's really only a matter of time.

You must not be a fan of our physical universe then.

There is a substantial difference between real 3D and fake 3D. Real 3D is what you see around yourself everyday where depth actually exists. Fake 3D is the rubbish that the movie and electronic industry would like us to pay money for by simulating real 3D on a 2D display. It simply does not work. I don't get headaches from fake 3D but I do get very annoyed at it because I can see that it is fake 3D and it just looks wrong. The only place where I think that fake 3D stands a chance is on an enormous screen like that at an IMAX where you cannot see real 3D at the same time as you are staring at the screen.

The secular bible might come off as a silly idea. But i've often pondered what i will tell my kids when the day comes and they ask "some people in my class are christian and some are jewish, what are we?" Kids hate feeling excluded, so i feel like saying we don't have a religion wouldnt go over well because they really don't understand what it means.

    Free.

Free to think as we want, when we want. Free to be critical of dogma. Free not to have a label attached to us.

My eldest son who is 17 is actually quite a bit more informed on the religious practices of most world religions than any of his classmates, religious or not.

As mentioned, I don't see the necessity in having a book on how not to do something. A genuine guide on humanistic ethics and morality might be useful but then most people, religious or not, might find it so.

agreed... and even if this wireless sync comes to existance it will be a waste. I'd way rather have a thunderbolt connector on the next set of iDevices than wireless sync. No point in being wireless if i have to leave it on a charger so the battery isn't half dead 3 hours later when it's done syncing. Why people would prefer that is beyond me :D

The delays were actually a good thing for me. Gave me time to "cool off" and realize that my iPad 1 is working just fine for me, and I can get along without upgrading to this generation.

LOL! That's precisely why the "limited supply" iPad2 launch was such a fiasco. You impulse buyers couldn't pull the trigger. Seriously... were this any other company other than Apple at least top 3 execs would have had their asses thrown out the door.

As an aside... my local Wal-Mart has had iPad2's for 2 weeks now. I've been there at least 3 times a week and they're always in stock.

When did we stop doing sane things in this country?

Wait a second, I was able to easily invest heavily in the future and still fix the budget problems, all while only cutting the military spending by around 25%. I had enough of a surplus, that I could have gone back and cut even less if needed, but would prefer to invest in US infrastructure and manufacturing capacity. Which, coincidentally, would be more important should the military need to rapidly grow than a few fancy trinkets (F22s, helicopters, etc...)
